Gleaner has served the agricultural industry for 65 years. In this time we have accumulated a wealth of expertise and knowledge to support your agricultural business. Carefully monitoring and protecting your fuel oil will ensure you have a steady supply available, keeping your farm machinery running.
There is a risk of unexpectedly running out of fuel if you do not know how much oil you have in your tank. Monitoring your oil levels will reduce your chances of running dry. This is true at any time of year, but especially during key times such as the sowing and harvesting periods, when you rely on your oil supply to fuel your machinery.
Installing an oil monitoring device to your fuel storage tank would allow you to easily and accurately see the level of oil in the tank, rather than relying on a manual dip or the built-in sight gauge.
Poorly maintained tanks can pose an environmental risk, should they suffer an unexpected leak. We recommend carrying out a check at least once a month to monitor any signs of damage, especially if your tank is 10 years of age or older.
Damage can occur for a variety of reasons, such as cold weather or sun exposure. Common signs of damage include: sun-bleaching, splits, cracks, an uneven base and die-back of the surrounding vegetation.
Rural properties can be more susceptible to falling victim to oil theft. Locating your oil tank in a well-lit location or out-of-sight from passer-by’s, as well as installing padlocks can help deter potential thieves. A sudden drop in oil level would indicate that an oil theft has occurred and should be investigated to rule out an accidental oil leak. If you suspect you have fallen victim to an oil theft, contact Police Scotland as soon as possible.
