The Importance of Boiler Maintenance in Winter

Now is the time to start considering your heating oil requirements before the winter season. Your heating system, boiler and storage tank health should also be included in your winter preparations. Planning ahead and keeping up-to-date with maintenance and servicing could help prevent an unexpected breakdown during the cold weather when you’ll need your heating the most.

Oil boilers are prone to ‘soot-up’, which can reduce their efficiency by up to 8%. An inefficient boiler will use more fuel than an efficient one. Now is the time to ensure your boiler is prepared for the extra strain it will experience with the colder weather.

The autumn and winter periods are the busiest for our engineers, therefore it is important to think ahead and book your annual service in plenty of time, before we are fully booked and busy with breakdown call-outs.

Why having your oil boiler serviced regularly is important:

An annual boiler service can help to reduce the chances of unexpected breakdowns or maintenance issues over winter. We recommend that boilers are serviced at least every 12 months to ensure they are working safely and efficiently. If you have not had your boiler serviced over the summer months we recommend you do so before the winter begins, to ensure it is working safely before the cold weather begins.

Routine boiler services help to detect developing problems before they worsen and ultimately lead to a boiler failure. Any faults or problems will be caught early on, reducing the chances of expensive breakdowns and repairs. This is particularly true leading up to the start of the cold weather. Our advice is to be prepared and ensure your boiler, heating system and fuel storage tank are functioning effectively and safely before the winter season when you’ll need them.

It is also important to note that both oil and gas boilers have the potential to emit carbon monoxide, which could go unnoticed and would be very dangerous. Having an annual service would reduce the chances of this happening, as any potential faults would be identified. An annual service would not only help to prevent an expensive and inconvenient breakdown, but is also important to ensure your heating system is operating safely.

Don’t forget to check your oil storage tank is prepared for the winter too:

It is equally important to ensure your fuel storage tank is safe to use before the colder weather starts.

During a service our OFTEC registered engineers will check your tank for any signs of damage such as: Rusting, bulging, leaks or damage. They will also check the base and pipes for cracks or damage.

We promote routinely checking your tank for any signs of damage, and wear & tear. Particularly before the cold weather arrives ensuring you have time to fix any issues you may find, before you’ll need your heating oil.
