The introduction of higher levels of FAME biofuel in to Gas Oil and Derv under the Governments changes to RTFO regulations aiming to reduce the effect of harmful greenhouse gases, initially brought wide-spread complications and issues for customers. Thanks to lobbying by trade associations and industry bodies working with oil refineries, the quantity of FAME has temporarily been brought down to levels which are causing much less issues for users of machinery and equipment that rely on the fuel to operate.
However, the issue of FAME content in white and red diesel is an on-going problem and isn’t one which is likely to disappear in the near future. Trade associations and industry bodies are still lobbying government and continue to work with refineries to find a long-term solution to the problem.
It is unclear at the moment how the introduction of higher levels of biofuel will affect how customer use, store and manage the fuel in the future. Even as a precautionary measure, customers are been encouraged to employ a more rigorous tank maintenance program to help safeguard equipment and machinery from any potential problems.
UKIFDA (The UK & Ireland Fuel Distribution Association) has advised the following steps as best practice’s for customers who use red diesel which contains FAME:
With the future still unclear, Gleaner would like to reassure our customers that we are committed to working with them to supply fuel which meets their needs for as long as required. We are also working with UKIFDA and other trade bodies where we can.
